I have a few friends who blog, some with more frequency than others, and it re-sparked the desire to do so myself.

There are great movie stars and musicians, but my idols will always be athletes.Īfter many years hiatus, I'm once again finding myself in a time of transition and thought spelling out some of my thoughts into the void might provide some clarity. So much so that Kofi Annan called sport a universal language when declaring 2005 the International Year of Sport and Physical Education. It's interwoven with politics, and universal across the world in a way art doesn't always reach. There's so much beauty, drama, artistry, psychology, and science in sport.
The more I see it the more I'm beginning to understand it. It's like hockey in slo-mo, but the broadcasters have different accents.Īnd cricket is becoming more prevalent in the US. I now spend weekend mornings I'm not playing volleyball watching the Premier League. In 2016 my friend took me to see Arsenal take on the MLS All-stars and I was hooked. And Arizonans want their local teams to do well so the teams they grew up with have a reason to come to town. Vikings fans welcome you to their table & pour you a beer. New Yorkers are the same as Massholes but they're just arrogant, where Massholes have a chip on their shoulder like they're New York's smaller sibling. The die hards usually give you a decent impression of what their part of the country is like: Massholes are Massholes.
GEORGE CARLIN YOUTUBE SOCCER MOMS SERIES
Ask anybody who got caught up in the 2016 Cubs World Series win. There's a sense of a shared experience that makes it possible to bond with a complete stranger over an event in which they might have witnessed in totally different places. The casual fan might get caught up in the bandwagon of a good season. You can learn so much about a person from their position on sports. There's so much more nuance and physics involved. Somehow volleyball became a picnic sport, and everyone and their brother thinks the belong in the "advanced" leagues, when in reality they never advanced beyond high school gym class where the only rule is not to let the ball hit the floor. But there's an immense difficulty in the fluidity of movement displayed on the ice (I for one lack that talent and look like Bambi trying just to stay upright), and the speed with which the players track the puck. Hockey on TV, or at least NHL hockey, is portrayed as all about tough guys hitting each other and not shooting the puck "enough".

It's usually relatively clear who has some knowledge or experience, and who has never played or studied the game before but think they know everything about it. I love watching people watch volleyball or hockey. Perhaps it's because of the frequency of scoring or the back and forth nature of play, but that could also describe my favorite sport: volleyball. I can't really explain my ambivalence to the sport. The analogy is especially fitting considering there's an article floating around the internet ether that the Cleveland Browns approached Condoleezza Rice about a coaching job.īasketball at least has the poetry of motion. Instead of lining up and facing off with muskets, it's 300lb men guarding against one slightly smaller dude who directs where the ball goes. American football is like a giant pre-WWI reenactment. To quote a Disney movie, "I love drama! It's so dramatic!"Īmerican football and basketball are two that just bore me to watch. Sure there are sports I don't like, but that doesn't mean I won't keep up with any drama that sport might cause. I'm always immediately disappointed when someone says "I don't follow sports." For whatever reason, when I hear that it makes me think none of our other interests will align either. Sports are a huge part of my life, and one of the easiest ways for me to connect with people.
